“Taoism: How the Way Influenced My Writing World”

I never realized how much the things I learned in high school English would impact my life. When Mr. Herger introduced us to the Transcendentalists, Emerson and Thoreau, he also sparked my search for my personal philosophy. 

I started exploring Taoism. I loved how much stress Taoism put on the individual. You were responsible for your happiness. If things were difficult, it was up to you to figure out where you’d gone astray and fix it.

I liked the idea of a natural flow to things and that when a person fell out of flow, things became difficult.

There was no higher being to blame for all your troubles. No way to sidestep your mistakes. Everything you did was on you. 

For me, it felt empowering. To be in charge of my life. To be the arbiter of my own happiness. To be in search of my way. 

Many years have passed since my initial interest was sparked, but Taoism continues to influence my writing world.

In my novel, my characters tend to get in their own way. I play with how responsible they are for their world and their happiness. Everything is very interconnected. I love to explore the unexpected dominoing of ramifications. 

With my writing career, I wasn’t going to accept not being published. I was going to take charge of my career. Attend workshops, go to conferences, enter contests, find a critique partner. Revise. Submit. Repeat.

Becoming an author is a treacherous path that has many dead-ends and cliffwalks. But I believed there was a passage to publication, it just needed time to be discovered. 

I do not believe anything worth having is easy. Most things are a process. And if I wasn’t making headway yet, there was a reason for it. There were skills to be mastered and craft to be improved. I was an apprentice who had to learn by doing.  

And everything that happened was preparation for the next phase of my writing career.

    Her characters do seem to be grounded in these ideas.
